Elevating Black youth’s voices by documenting their stories of changemaking

About the Study

Black Lives Matter brought national attention to the civic power of Black youth, but community organizations and adults who work with youth have known for years that Black youth are community leaders, social change agents, and passionate about making the world a better place. Unfortunately, there is a lack of research on how Black youth make political and social change in their communities, nation, and world.

We interviewed Black youth in Los Angeles who are changemakers, that is, youth who are engaged in social or political change. Hearing from youth in their own voices will shed new light on the strengths of Black youth and their communities.

The main goal of the study is to elevate youth’s voices by documenting their stories of becoming civically engaged. We aim to understand the turning points, issues, experiences, and resources that have led Black youth to become Changemakers.

What is a Changemaker?

Young Black Changemakers are youth identifying as Black who are actively engaged in social or political change. In other words, they are civically engaged. Civic engagement can take many different forms for youth, and any activity that reflects passion and commitment to social or political change.

Examples include:

  • Helping others in need

  • Helping family

  • Speaking out against injustice or unfairness

  • Mentoring younger children or peers

  • Conserving resources to protect the environment

  • Volunteering for an organization or cause

  • Contacting a government official

  • Campaigning for a cause or candidate

  • Protesting or demonstrating an injustice

  • Organizing or advocating for a policy

  • Participating in a group, club, or team

  • Participating in religious programs or services

  • Participating in music or art that shares an important message

  • Organizing community events or activities

  • Following the news and staying informed about issues

  • Posting on social media about social issues

There are other forms of civic engagement as well!

How will the results be used?

Our study will identify the factors that motivate, facilitate, and empower Black youth to engage in social and political change. These findings will offer practical implications for how schools, organizations, and communities can better support Black youth’s authentic contributions to social change.
